Joe Gengelbach was an outstanding football lineman for the Aces for three years in the late ’60s. The native of Tell City, Ind. became a teacher and coach at nearby North Posey High School immediately after graduating from UE in 1969, and has been there ever since. After one year as assistant football coach, Gengelbach assumed the head coaching position in 1970. In his 40 years as head coach, the Vikings have produced a record of 232-185-1, with four sectional championships, four regional championships, and a semistate championship in 2005 when North Posey set a school record with 12 victories and finished as the Class 2A runnerup. North Posey has also won five Pocket Athletic Conference championships, most recently in 2008. Gengelbach also served as athletics director at NPHS from 1980-1995. He is a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, past president of the Indiana Football Coaches Association, 2008 recipient of the Charles F. Maas Distinguished Service Award from the Indiana High School Athletic Association, and currently serves as Region 9 Ethics Chairman. Joe and his wife Shannon, have two children, Mike and Mark, and five grandchildren.
